Abstract

The article focuses on the linguistic problem of East and West in the era of the GDR
and the FRG in the framework of political discourse. The relevance of the research is determined by
the free access to numerous documents published in the GDR and FRG due to their declassification and the need to translate them correctly into other languages. The aim of the current research is to
identify usage peculiarities of lexical units in political language in German marked by the linguistic
problem of East and West in the era of the GDR and the FRG. The author reviews the history of the
study of the East and West linguistic problem, examines the specifics of the language units used at
that time in political discourse, analyses the unique lexemes in the speeches of the GDR and FRG
leaders and suggests their translation equivalents.
