The grammar of four-character Proto-Chinese phraseological composites in modern Japanese

This article examines four-character Proto-Chinese phraseological compounds (P4PCs, 四字熟語 yojijukugo), which originated in wenyan (Classical Chinese), are deeply rooted in Chinese history and culture, and continue to play a significant role in modern Japanese. Through functional-syntactic analysis, the study identifies key patterns of syntactic usage and outlines the principal structural types of P4PCs. These compounds are treated as complex syntactic constructions and are classified according to their internal syntax into two main types: (1) those with a phrasal structure and (2) those with a clausal or sentential structure. From a functional-semantic perspective, P4PCs in Japanese are further categorized into four classes: nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial units. Many P4PCs retain the functional-semantic transitivity inherited from wenyan. Additionally, new compounds continue to be formed in modern Japanese following Proto-Chinese models. P4PCs function as powerful tools of linguistic expression and represent an integral element of contemporary Japanese linguistic culture.
