In this article, we investigate the structure and semantic properties of bi-character phraseological units in modern Japanese, employing structural-semantic, etymological, and functional analysis methods. We elucidate their "inner form" as per A.A. Potebnja’s concept, alongside their structural and semantic attributes and functional-syntactic properties. These units constitute the most extensive and understudied category of proto-Chinese phraseologies in contemporary Japanese. The authors delineate the principal ways of idiomatization of these units, their fundamental structural types, and their functional-semantic classes, aligning them with various parts of speech. The mechanisms of metaphorization of meanings of these bi-character proto-Chinese phraseological units are analyzed from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and G. Lakoff and M. Johnson’s theory of conceptual metaphor.
