Abstract

Based on the author’s field materials and data from research literature, the article examines the role of food in the basic rites of Selkup cultural tradition. Selkup ritual food is divided into two types – sacrificial food for spirits and food for people. The main meaning of feeding spirits is to show respect, thank, appease them and obtain from them the desired participation or non-participation in human life. Sharing food with people carries the meaning of providing participation in the celebrated event.
