Abstract

The article is aimed to define the role of translator's linguistic identity and its impact on the translation product. The analysis of this question, together with a clear distinction between the professional approach to translation and the free interpretation of the source text, justified by personal perception and traits of the translator, is of great practical importance. The research is based on the Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling. The following versions have been studied: the US version of the first book of the series – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, its translations into Russian made by Rosman (translators I.V. Oransky) and Machaon (M.V. Spivak) publishing houses and the fan translation by an online project called Potter's Army.
