Lexis of emotions in the “Book of Proverbs” in the English language

Abstract

This article examines four basic emotions represented in the English version of “The Book of Proverbs” by means of the lexical emotives love, fear, joy and anger, along with their derivatives. One hundred units representing the lexis of emotions were identified. The emotives in the proverbs actualize the emotional concepts that play an important role in creating the emotive tonality of the text. In this context, love is associated with wisdom, fear with respect for God, joy with a righteous way of life, and anger requires control. The proverbs provide answers to questions about spiritual values, moral behavior and the meaning of human existence by appealing to the emotional sphere, and thus emotives emerge as a key category of lexical units in one of the most important 
didactic books of the Old Testament.
