The specificity of the genre nature and communicative-pragmatic organization of “The Tale of our Father Agapius”

Abstract

This article analyzes the author's communicative goal of providing spiritual guidance to the reader through a narrative about the righteous Agapius. This is achieved by employing model texts from various genres, most notably hagiography, pilgrimage literature, and homily. “The Tale of Our Father Agapius” exemplifies genre syncretism, incorporating features from several canonical genres of medieval Orthodox literature. This influences the text's unique communicative and pragmatic organization, evident in its compositional strategies (e.g., the assembly of textual units), the use of formulaic expressions, and genre-specific linguistic devices.
