Abstract

The article examines the recurring motif of fishing and the image of a fisherman in the works of John Fowles. Based on the material of the novel “The Magus”, the stories “The Ebony Tower” and “The Cloud”, we explore the genesis and meaning of this motif, as well as the originality of the fishermen image. We found that this motif which appears in key scenes has an allusive connection to medieval Holy Grail romances and should be one of the elements of the initiation and creativity themes in the studied works.
