Abstract

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of so-called “retrospective continuity” in Japanese literature of the first half of the 20th century. It’s based on two works by famous Japanese writer Tanizaki Junichirō: “Arrowroot” and “Captain Shigemoto’s Mother”. The research consists of analyzing cultural and historical context of the novellas; some peculiarities of their structure and stylization; and also references to legends and classical Japanese literature. The phenomenon of “retrospective continuity” is explained in relation to the impact of Japan’s modernization and westernization on its literary process and society. It also reveals the importance of “turning to the past” for the Tanizaki’s creative path and development of new Japanese literature.
