Abstract

The paper summarizes research on the early history of Sugiura Trading Company in Vladivostok. It unveils the background leading to the establishment of the company, and the main stages of its growth. The research covers the period from 1880 to 1890s, starting with opening of Vladivostok branch of Foreign Trade Company, and up to the first years of operation of Sugiura Company. The paper collects and compares data from Japanese archive materials, statements made by the company’s contemporaries, and modern day researches.
