Abstract

The purpose of this linguistic research is to determine a) to what extent the method of text reduction is applicable to identify cohesion links in a speech product; b) to what extent a reduced text is able to maintain its communicative potential. The research is based on two texts – an article by the American political analyst J. K. Smith and a publication by the Soviet journalist V. G. Chukhlantsev. Both texts are dedicated to the meeting of the Soviet and American leaders in November 1974 in Vladivostok. The tasks can be outlined as follows: a) creation of reduced texts on the basis of the keyword "Владивосток/ Vladivostok"; b) analysis of communicative features of the reduced texts against their full-text versions; c) getting non-verbal information from the reduced versions of the articles. The research relies on linguo-pragmatic methods and focuses on the information structure of the texts and the "addresser factor".
