Abstract

This paper analyzes the theories of Japanese yokai scholars about what is the meaning behind the term
yokai. Examines the influence of the frequency of natural disasters and historical events on the creation of a large
number of images of horror, as well as faith in them. Theories are given as an example that explains the existence of
many yokai from genetic and psychoanalytical point of view. The Japanese, judging by researches, are more prone
to anxiety than other nations. Many of the studies used in the work were written in the 21st century and therefore new
information on the topic was introduced.
