Abstract

Mass protests took place in Kazakhstan in early January 2022. The events mark the opening of a new era in
which President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will play a dominant role. Analyzing the reactions of the Chinese and Russian
governments as important regional players, we can assume that cooperation between Kazakhstan and China will still
face many uncertainties, such as terrorist threats, Sinophobic sentiments in Kazakhstan, the issue of settling relations
with Russia, etc. To deepen economic cooperation and ensure the region's security in the new geopolitical realities, the
parties will use such regional coordination mechanisms as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
