Abstract

The paper analyzes how the scale of port activities and,
in particular, cargo turnover, impact on the socio-economic development of port cities. The issue is the following: ports create positive effects associated with trade, investment and new jobs, but at the same time they can so harm to the surrounding areas, which expresses the through environmental pollution, increased
morbidity, premature mortality, crime growth. With the help of an econometric analysis of twin cities, Khabarovsk and Vladivostok, one of which has a large seaport,
and the other does not, it was found that there is a significant non-linear relationship
between cargo turnover and the wage level, as well as between the cargo turnover
and the crime. Starting from the certain size of the port, its positive impact on the
city economy is accompanied by an increase in crime.
