Abstract

The building at Svetlanskaya Street 52 and the name of the military governor, Major-General Pavel Fedorovich Unterberger, is well known to Vladivostok residents. This house was
the military governor's residence, and his eldest son Peter Unterberger remembers it fondly. Peter
Unterberger left his memoirs «Between Two Chairs. Observations, Thoughts and Memoirs of Peter
Unterberger (1881–1960)», which his granddaughter Erika Georgievna Unterberger, who lives in
Gmunden, Austria, kindly made available to us. The first 700 pages of the memoirs from his childhood, youth and adolescence were published by LIT. We invite you to enjoy the translation of selected
episodes from the second part of the memoirs.
