Abstract

The article compares Russian animal tales recorded in the XIX and XX centuries. The characteristic of the principles of creating the image of a cat and the reflection of the ancient
complex of folk ideas about this animal in the texts from the collection of A.N. Afanasyev is given. The degree of preservation of ancient ideas and principles of creating the image of a cat in fairy tales of the second half of the XX century, recorded in Siberia and the Far East, is revealed. The type of trickster that embodies the considered image in fairy tales of different centuries is determined, the regional component is characterized.
