The problem of freedom in the John Fowles’s aesthetic system: the author, language, and the reader

The article examines John Fowles’s attitude to the problem of freedom through the prism of the author’s concept. It is noted that the writer pays particular attention to the choice of narrative mode, which largely determines the degree of the reader’s freedom – a value of paramount importance to him. Consequently, his own works demonstrate a gradual shift towards a third-person narrative mode. However, the author’s striving for an objective narrative tone is undermined by the inherent “unfreedom” in the writer’s relationship with language. Fowles’s stance on this issue echoes Roland Barthes’s famous paradigm, but only partially: the English novelist refuses to grant freedom to the reader at the price demanded by Barthes – the sacrifice of the author’s freedom (and indeed, the author’s very existence). Instead, Fowles seeks to adopt a narrative position from which the author guides the reader but does so solely to teach them how to be free.
