Abstract

The works of A.P. Chekhov of the second stage of creative evolution are called “fableless”, since the external event component is weakened in them. The plot movement of the author’s thought is organized not through a change of actions, but thanks to an expanded system of narrative motifs, the invariant of which in the story “The Steppe” is the road motif, which has valence and the ability to imply a certain set of “incoming” motifs. In this regard, this study aims to consider the artistic implementation of the happiness motif, for which the author analyzes its lexical and semantic content in connection with the central character of the story Yegorushka and nature images.
