Abstract

Uchi/soto is a key concept for Japanese people which helps them to identify themselves and others. This binary structure influences various areas including Japanese literature. The most significant period in the context of the uchi/soto influence on Japanese literature is Meiji era (1868–1912). The short story “Long Hair” (Chohatsu) by Nagai Kafu (1879–1959), which became a part of the writer’s short story collection “Tales of America” (Amerika monogotari, 1908), shows specific features of uchi/soto as both a socio-cultural concept and a basic element of Nagai Kafu’s early creative work.
